Thinking about trying canoeing for the first time? Kangaroo Valley is one of the best places in Australia to begin. With calm stretches of the Shoalhaven River, beautiful escarpment scenery and abundant wildlife, a canoe adventure here is both relaxing and accessible for beginners. At Valley Outdoors, we guide first-time paddlers every week and many quickly discover that canoeing is far easier and more enjoyable than they expected.

Your First Canoe Adventure Starts Here

If you’ve never been canoeing before, Kangaroo Valley is one of the best places in Australia to start.

With its gentle river stretches, spectacular escarpment views, and peaceful natural setting, the Kangaroo and Shoalhaven River offers a paddling experience that feels adventurous but remains accessible for beginners.

At Valley Outdoors, we welcome many people who are trying canoeing for the very first time. By the end of the trip, most are already planning their next paddle.

If you’re wondering what to expect on your first canoe adventure, this guide will help you feel confident and prepared.

The Shoalhaven River Is Perfect for Beginners

The Kangaroo and Shoalhaven River through Kangaroo Valley is known for its calm sections and beautiful scenery making it ideal for first-time paddlers.

You don’t need previous experience to enjoy a canoe trip here.

Most first-time paddlers quickly learn the basics and are comfortably moving along the river within minutes.

Our team provides clear instructions before you head out, including:

  • How to paddle efficiently
  • How to steer your canoe
  • How to stay balanced
  • How to work together if paddling tandem

Once you’re on the water, it becomes surprisingly intuitive.

Canoeing Is Easier Than You Think

Many beginners imagine canoeing will be difficult or tiring.

In reality, canoeing is one of the most relaxing ways to explore nature.

The canoe glides smoothly across the water, and the gentle rhythm of paddling quickly becomes second nature.

Many guests tell us they feel themselves slowing down within minutes - enjoying the sounds of birds, the reflections on the water, and the quiet pace of river travel.

You Don’t Need Fancy Gear

Another common concern for first-time paddlers is equipment.

At Valley Outdoors, we provide everything you need for a safe and enjoyable trip, including:

  • Stable canoes suitable for beginners
  • Paddles
  • Life jackets
  • Briefing and instructions
  • Local knowledge about the river and venue

All you need to bring is comfortable outdoor clothing, water, and a sense of adventure.

Wildlife Encounters Are Common

One of the special parts of paddling the Shoalhaven and Kangaroo River is the wildlife.

As you drift quietly along the water, you may spot:

  • Kingfishers and herons
  • Soaring wedge-tailed eagles
  • The occasional wallaby and water dragons along the riverbanks

Because canoes move quietly through the landscape, they allow you to observe nature in a very gentle way.

It’s Perfect for Families and Friends

Canoeing is one of the few outdoor adventures that works beautifully across generations.

We regularly see:

  • Families paddling together
  • Couples enjoying a quiet day on the river
  • Groups of friends exploring Kangaroo Valley
  • Beginners discovering a love for paddling

Canoes are designed for stability and teamwork, making them ideal for shared adventures.

Guided or Self-Guided Options

Depending on the experience you want, you can choose between:

Self-Guided Canoe Hire

Perfect for relaxed exploration at your own pace.

You’ll receive equipment, instructions, and local tips before setting off down the river.

Guided Canoe Adventures

Great for beginners who want a little extra support.

Our guides share:

  • Paddling skills and techniques
  • River knowledge
  • Local stories about Kangaroo Valley
  • Hidden spots along the river
  • Supervised swimming time
  • Delicious picnics on the riverbanks

What to Bring on Your First Canoe Trip

To stay comfortable during your adventure, we recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable outdoor clothing
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Water bottle and snacks
  • Closed-toe shoes that can get wet
  • Rain jacket if showers are forecast

Avoid cotton clothing if possible, as it stays wet longer.

The Best Part: Slowing Down

Modern life moves quickly.

Canoeing invites you to slow down.

As you glide along the river, surrounded by cliffs, forests, and birdsong, you begin to notice small details - the reflections on the water, the movement of clouds, the rhythm of paddling.

For many first-time paddlers, this is what makes canoeing so special.

We have recently visited Kangaroo valley and have done River Cannoying had a very good experience, we are glad that we have chosen Valley Outdoors for Hiring our Cannoying boat and equipment, the owner was so kind and gentle and professionally guided us and well prepared us with all the necessary information for Cannooying in the river, we told them we are not professionals, doing it for very first time.Their equipment including the quality of boats were really good.I also ended up in buying some swim warmers with decent prices, they were of so good quality with rare colours available which you barely can find outside I definitely recommend my friends to this shop.

We had a great afternoon in a canoe cruising down the river. Sarah was extremely friendly and patiently walked us through what we should expect. Brie took us to the place and everyone received an excellent crash course on how to handle the equipment. The density of wildlife is truly astonishing - wombats, lyre birds, kingfishers, red belly blacks to name a few. We are looking forward to visiting again!
