No trains. No highways. Just winding roads, mountain views, and a feeling of arrival that starts before you even get here. If you’ve ever wondered how to get to Kangaroo Valley—or if it’s worth the drive—the answer is yes. Every. Single. Time.
Kangaroo Valley is nestled between the Southern Highlands and the NSW South Coast, about 2 hours from Sydney and 2.5 hours from Canberra. It’s part of the Shoalhaven region and lies in a protected pocket of rainforest, farmland, rivers and cliffs.
There are three ways into the Valley - and each one involves a scenic mountain pass. Whether you drive in from Bowral, Moss Vale, Berry, or Nowra, the moment you descend into the Valley, the view alone will make the trip worth it.
Route: Head south on the M5 (which becomes the Hume Motorway), take the Mittagong exit and follow signs to Fitzroy Falls. From there, take Myra Vale Rd down Barrengarry Mountain into Kangaroo Valley.
Why this route? It’s the most direct and offers great roadside stops like Bowral, Moss Vale, or Fitzroy Falls. Ideal if you want cafes, gardens or waterfalls along the way.
Distance: Approx. 200km
Route: Travel north on the Federal Highway, then Hume Highway. Exit at Sutton Forest or Moss Vale and follow signs to Fitzroy Falls and Kangaroo Valley via Barrengarry Mountain.
Why this route? It’s smooth, scenic, and you can stop for a pie in Berrima or a view at Fitzroy Falls. Perfect for weekend escapes.
Route: From Nowra, take Moss Vale Rd west. From Berry, head through Cambewarra and over the Cambewarra Mountain.
Why this route? You’ll wind through temperate rainforest, past lookout points and through farmland. It’s an adventure with a view.
Is there public transport?
There’s no direct train or regular buses for tourists into Kangaroo Valley. The closest train stations are in Bombaderry or Moss Vale. From there, taxis or pre-arranged transfers are your best bet. Hiring a car gives you greater flexibility to explore once you're here, and this is what we recommend to have the best experience in KV.
Is the drive safe?
Yes - but note that all roads into Kangaroo Valley involve steep, winding sections. Drive with care, especially in wet weather. Go slow, take your time, and enjoy the view.
Can I bring a caravan or trailer?
Yes, but be prepared for tight corners on mountain roads. The descent into the Valley from Barrengarry or Cambewarra can be narrow. Drive carefully.
Do I need a 4WD?
Nope! All main roads into the Valley are sealed. A regular 2WD car is perfect.
Are there EV chargers?
Yes! Kangaroo Valley has an electric vehicle charger located at Banksia Park Cottages.
Driving across the Hampden Bridge is a heritage-listed single-span suspension bridge that carries Moss Vale Road across the Kangaroo River. It is the second most photographed bridge in Australia and the gateway to the beautiful village of Kangaroo valley.
When you arrive, the phone reception becomes intermittent , the air smells fresh, and time begins to slow down. You’ll find yourself saying “this place is beautiful” before you even park the car.
