It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked — “Do I need to be able to swim to go canoeing?” The short answer? No. We regularly welcome non-swimmers on our canoe hire and guided tours in Kangaroo Valley, and we’ve designed the experience to be safe, supportive and inclusive for everyone.
If you can’t swim, you’re still absolutely welcome on the water.
You won’t be the first person to ask. And you might not be the only non-swimmer in your group either.
At Valley Outdoors, we believe everyone should get the chance to experience the joy of canoeing. Swimming skills aren’t a requirement.
We regularly host:
It’s completely normal, and it’s completely manageable.
Safety isn’t an add-on for us. It’s built into the whole experience.
1. Everyone Wears a Life Jacket
Every single person on the water wears a properly fitted life jacket.
Ours:
A good life jacket keeps you buoyant. If you ended up in the water, it supports you. You won’t be left trying to tread water.
2. Our Canoes Are Stable and Beginner-Friendly
We use wide, stable canoes designed for calm river conditions.
The Shoalhaven River around Kangaroo Valley is generally:
We’re not running white-water rapids. This isn’t extreme paddling. It’s relaxed, scenic canoeing that families and first timers handle every day.

3. We Show You Exactly What to Do
Before you launch, we run through everything clearly and simply.
You’ll learn:
No overcomplicated instructions. Just practical guidance so you feel confident.
4. You’re Not Out There Alone
If you’re on a guided tour, your guide is right there.
They’ll:
If you’re hiring independently, we still make sure you understand the conditions before you go.
If you’ve got concerns, just tell us. We’d much rather talk it through than have you quietly worrying.
What If the Canoe Tips?
Let’s be honest. That’s usually the real fear.
Capsizes are rare in calm conditions when instructions are followed. But canoeing is a water activity, so it’s fair to ask.
If it did happen:
Most people are surprised by how gentle the river actually feels once they’re out there.
You don’t need:
You just need:
We’ve seen plenty of guests arrive nervous and leave saying, “That was easier than I thought.”
Confidence builds quickly once you’re on the water.
If your child can’t swim well (or at all) that’s okay.
We provide properly fitted kids’ life jackets. We paddle in calm conditions. And we keep things straightforward.
Plenty of kids who start the day unsure end up loving it.
If you’ve got specific concerns about your child, let us know before your trip. We’re happy to talk it through.
Valley Outdoors is an accessible and inclusive experience provider. We genuinely believe everyone should have the chance to experience canoeing, swimming skills or not.
If you’re unsure, just ask us! Tell us your concerns. Tell us what’s making you hesitate. We’ll explain exactly how it works and what to expect. No pressure. Just honest answers.
It’s not “Can I swim?” It’s “Do I want to experience this?”
Quiet stretches of river. Birdlife overhead. Time with family. Fresh air and open space. You don’t need to be a swimmer to enjoy that. You just need to dip your paddle in.
