There’s a feeling I get every time I drive down into Kangaroo Valley - when I wind down my car window, witness the towering gum trees and feel the air temperature start to change. It’s something between a deep breath and a memory waiting to unfold.
For me, Kangaroo Valley isn’t just home - it’s a place that reminds us how good it feels to be outside, to be with people we love, and to have time to notice the little things. It’s the wombats grazing at dusk. The sound of paddles gently dipping into water. The way kids laugh louder and adults breathe easier.
Tucked between the Southern Highlands and South Coast of NSW, this peaceful patch of wilderness has no train lines and no through traffic - just mountain roads, rolling farmland, and a village that wraps you in its charm the moment you arrive.
And while it’s one of Australia’s best-kept secrets for family holidays, it’s not about ticking off a list of sights. It’s about connection. To each other. To the land. And to the quiet joy of doing less, more deeply.

If you’ve ever longed for a holiday where your family could truly slow down - where time stretches, laughter lingers, and nature gently nudges you back into the moment - then Kangaroo Valley might be the place you didn’t know you were missing.
There’s something magic about how simple joys stack up here. Walking becomes a pleasure, not a chore. From the village oval, the footpath winds past towering trees and quiet homes, across the iconic sandstone arches of Hampden Bridge, and all the way to the beloved local pump track. It’s an easy route for wandering grandparents, energetic kids on scooters, and parents pushing prams side-by-side.
At the pump track, the community’s heart is on full display. Kids ride laps while grown-ups watch from the shaded benches, drink bottles refilled at the water fountain, and the air filled with laughter and countryside birdsong. Nearby, a picnic patch offers the perfect resting spot.

Curious minds will love discovering the Kangaroo Valley Endangered Species Trail - a self-guided, interactive walk designed for all ages. With QR codes and a Google Map, families can seek out rare and threatened native species, learning together about the creatures that call this valley home. It’s the kind of walk that sparks questions, wonder, and deep appreciation for nature’s intricacy.
Of course, Hampden Bridge itself is more than just a beautiful passage - it’s a portal to the past. For over 125 years, it’s welcomed wanderers with its proud sandstone towers. Just below it lies a serene riverside spot - perfect for paddling, swimming, or simply sitting quietly with a thermos of tea as the river murmurs past.
If your crew prefers a bit more structure, the Kangaroo Valley Village Pool is a treat. Open November to March, it’s one of the most scenic swimming spots in town, with a 25-metre lap pool for grown-ups and a shaded splash zone for toddlers. Few pools come with mountain views like these.

For a glimpse into the Kangaroo Valley’s early days, the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Museum offers a hands-on way to connect with local history. Wander through old buildings, enjoy a picnic under the trees, and take a gentle bushwalk out the back. It’s simple, grounded, and full of stories.
Just around the corner, you’ll find the local tennis and basketball courts - perfect for a friendly family match or a casual afternoon shoot-around. The smooth concrete makes it a great spot for skating, scootering, or simply relaxing with a laid-back barbecue. With picnic tables, shaded spots, and public amenities nearby, it’s the kind of place that invites you to stay a little longer.
And then there’s Bendeela Recreation Area - a must-see for many who visit. Wombats wander through campsites, water dragons sun themselves on rocks, and flocks of birds chatter in the trees. Families come to camp, canoe, or simply explore this riverside gem that feels untouched by time.
When you’ve had your fill of nature’s treasures, the village’s main street welcomes you back with a different kind of joy: fudge, ice cream, and boutique stores. Kids giggle over rainbow sweets, adults savour their coffee slowly, and there’s always time for a happy snap by the vintage phone booth or cheerful Vespa outside the local pub.

If there’s one experience that captures the heart of Kangaroo Valley - and everything we stand for at Valley Outdoors - it’s paddling a canoe on the calm waters of the Kangaroo and Upper Shoalhaven River.
There’s a quiet kind of magic that happens when families journey in a canoe together. Time slows. Conversations deepen. Even the most restless kids fall into the rhythm of the paddle, mesmerised by dragonflies skipping over the water and the ripple of their own movement through the river.
Canoeing is a gentle, soul-filling connection. And it’s our absolute favourite thing to share.
If you're considering paddling with toddlers for the first time, or reconnecting with teenagers who’ve grown up faster than you expected, the river makes space for everyone. We see grandparents, parents, and kids all together in one canoe, rediscovering what it means to share time in nature together.
Here’s how you can join the experience:

Launching from Tallowa Dam, this journey takes you deep into the wilderness where sandstone cliffs rise above mirror-like water and the only sounds are birdcalls and paddle strokes. It’s ideal for families and couples wanting to disconnect, or small groups chasing a sense of remoteness and reward. We provide all the equipment including canoes, paddles, lifejackets, barrels, maps, and offer local insights - you provide the curiosity and the spirit of exploration.
On the river, you’re likely to spot kingfishers darting low, water dragons basking on sun-warmed rocks, and eagles perusing high above the shoreline. If you’re lucky, you may even glimpse a goanna or echidna, or hear lyrebirds echoing from the gorge walls.
And while the wildlife and scenery are truly breathtaking, what really moves people isn’t what they see - it’s what they feel. A sense of peace. A return to what matters. The realisation that we all need a little more nature, and a little less noise.
At Valley Outdoors, we make these moments accessible, inclusive, and truly meaningful. Choose to paddle for a few hours or set off for days, we’re here to guide you gently - and joyfully - into Time in Nature Together.
